Outlook for Darden Alumni

Due to a change in Microsoft’s security policy, access to all Darden Alumni email accounts will require “modern authentication” as of Oct. 1, 2022. Modern authentication provides additional security for your account, making it more difficult for attackers to gain unauthorized access. One of the modern authentication security features is the use of multifactor authentication or “MFA”.

MFA adds another layer of protection to your account. A second authentication method, such as a code sent via text or email, will be needed in addition to your password. To set up or update the MFA methods used for accessing your Darden Alumni email, please contact the Office of Engagement by sending an email to [email protected].

It is strongly recommended that you use Microsoft Outlook because that is the only email platform that is guaranteed to work with modern authentication. Other email clients, such as the macOS and iOS Mail apps, may or may not work.

The following instructions are for adding your Darden Alumni email to the Outlook desktop app (Windows and macOS) and the iOS mobile app. Please note that because your Darden Alumni email does not include a license for the Outlook desktop app, it cannot be added as the primary account. It can be added as a secondary mailbox if Outlook is licensed through a different account. If you do not have a license for the Outlook desktop app, you can always access your Darden Alumni email by logging in to the Outlook Web App (OWA) found at outlook.office.com.

Windows

  • In Outlook, click File in the upper-left corner:

  • On the File page, click Add Account:

  • In the window that opens, enter your Darden Alumni email address and click Connect:

  • If prompted, enter your Darden Alumni email address again and click Next (you might not get this and will instead see the password window next):

  • Enter your Darden password and click Sign In:

  • Complete the multifactor authentication. The screenshot below shows the prompt for the Microsoft Authenticator app, but depending on the methods you’ve set up, you may be prompted for a phone call, text message, etc):

  • On the final window, click Done:

You should now see your Darden Alumni account in Outlook under your primary account.

Mac

First, if your Outlook is similar to this:

…you will need to turn off “New Outlook”. Click the Outlook menu and then click New Outlook to remove the check mark:

Once Outlook has restarted, go back to the Outlook menu above and click Preferences…

  • In the window that opens, click Accounts:

  • In the Accounts window, click the + icon in the lower-left corner and select New Account…

  • In the Add Account window, enter your Darden Alumni email address and click Continue:

  • Enter your Darden Alumni password and click Sign in (your window may look slightly different):

  • You should now see this window indicating that the account has been successfully added; click Done:

If you see an error message stating that “Account already exists”, that likely means you are still using “New Outlook”. You will need to disable “New Outlook” as per the first two steps in this section.

You should now see your Darden Alumni mailbox in Outlook under your primary account.

Mobile

Your Darden Alumni email account can be used with the Outlook mobile app without requiring it to be fully licensed through a different account like the Windows and macOS desktop apps. This means that you can use your Darden Alumni account as the primary or secondary account in the Outlook app on your mobile device.

The following instructions are for iOS, but can generally be applied to Android as well. For Android-specific instructions, please see this Microsoft page.

  • Install the Microsoft Outlook app from the App Store; once installed, open Outlook. The app icon looks like this:

  • Depending on the multifactor authentication (MFA) methods you have set up, you will either be prompted to open the Microsoft Authenticator app:
